You need to register to be able to log in. Then, you'll get an email that you have to open in order to be able to log in. Steve says it is to prevent anyone else from logging in on your behalf. Once you have logged in, you'll be able to "switch view" at the top and see which items you have read and which ones you haven't read. Hope this helps.
