Dusty,

Best of luck to her on Monday. I would love to run Boston, but I've never been fast enough to qualify. Bad feet are an occupational hazard of running. Mine look only faintly human after a lifetime of pounding.

Dusty - this was in my file of memorable quotes. Will

My feet are runner’s feet;
a little rough around the edges,
with black nails
on the toes where I have nails at all
Lovingly decorated with bright colors.

My toes are warriors, of a sort.
They carry the entire continent of my body on
adventures
and rise to challenges that could crush them.
Some days they are worn and calloused
but they are strong and fierce adversaries for the
rocks they overtake.

My arches are the springboard of my soul.
They give me lift with every step I take
and cushion all my landings.
They are always ready
when I want to jump for joy.

My heels respond when the shepherd
of my spirit nips at them to run.
They strike again and again,
to thwart frustration,
to redeem the day.

My feet are runner’s feet;
a little rough around the edges,
but they are strong
and they are willing
and Oh, I love them.

Happens to the best marathoners... it has to be your day if you are running for time and not jogging it. There is that wall and sometime you get through it and sometimes you smack into it. Great attempt. 18 miles is a good long run.

Wow, I hope she's not too upset by whatever happened, and that she recovers quickly. It's amazing that she was able to qualify for Boston, and get that far at that speed. Like Eric said, everything really has to align perfectly for a marathon to go well for someone.

I've only had the ambition to do one, but I had my eye on a couple of backup races 1-4 weeks later in case weather was bad or I just didn't have a great day and felt like I could've done more. Unfortunately, there's no other "Boston" til next year.

Hopefully she had an enjoyable trip and an enjoyable 30k at BOSTON, and can be happy enough with that for now.

Dusty,

Being a marathon runner is like being a busboy in a restaurant. You're not a real one until you've dropped your first tray. I have a long history of dropping in ultramarathons. The first one really bothered me, but I got over it. I'll forget about the next one quickly and move on. Tiff will do the same after a while.
