Asking Docters Questions
May 15, 2001 07:47PM
My wife is a at risk Hd person. I have been watching the symptoms in Her for four years now. She comes from a family of (11) children. Her mother died of Hd. Mary's older brother and younger sister has it. Mary has decided it is time to go see a docter. Could someone help me to bring together a list of questions that we should ask the docter. Mary insisted on picking the docter and Her reason for picking this one was that He is on the first floor and He takes our insurance. I'm not totaly lost for questions but on the outher hand I don't want to miss any.
Thanks for your help! Gene

Hi Gene, I guess the big question that would be uppermost in my mind at this juncture is, how much does this Doctor know about Huntingtons Disease, has he ever seen it? Does he know what it is? has he ever treated someone with HD.If the answer to these questions is NO,then you have Two options,is he amenable to recieving information? if not find someone who has the experience, just because he has MD. after his or her name does not mean they are qualified to treat your wife.

Where are you located? I'm sure some of the wonderful people reading your letter could give you the name of a HD specialist in your area. My husband's doctor is fabulous and I would recommend him if you lived near. My husband's first neurologist new NOTHING about HD. Visiting him was a total waste of time and money as he was clueless about medications, diagnostic tests, research, or symptoms. Don't waste your time-look for the best.
To answer your question Anonn. We live in St. Louis. I have been in contact with the local HD support group here. They said to go to washU here. Two problems are Mary will not get on a elevator and they do not take our insurance. Mary will go up a flight of strairs but has to hold on. I usually try to stay in frount of Her or behind Her depending on which way we are going. She dosn't like me to give a lot of help. She isn't ready for it yet.
Thanks Gene
