H1N1 Vaccine and HD
October 28, 2009 02:12PM
I would like to know what others think of this vaccine because I'm really confused about it.
A lot of people believe it can induce some collateral damages that include neurological damage. When I heard that, of course, I freaked out and my husband felt really happy 'cos he found the best excuse not to get the shot since he didn't want to get vaccinated anyway. But do you think it's risky for people who has HD or who are at risk to get the shot?

How many swine flu deaths have you heard of and how many other problems have you heard of? The side affect of swine flu is dieing. People need to the math properly. It would have been in the regular flu shot could they have prepared that one that way. Get your shots... both of them.

Actually one article I read indicated those with neurological diseases were at higher risk for serious complications if they contracted H1N1 and should be among the first to get in line for the shot. If I happen to find the article I'll post a link.

HA! Easy for you to say, Eric! You don't know my husband... no way he's gonna accept to get it now. Not because he's affraid of side effects: it's the other way around! He doesn't mind getting the flu, so he doesn't want to get the shot and now that people talk about side effects, he found the perfect excuse not to get vaccinated.
I'm the one who's affraid of both, side effects (in his case) and the flu (for both of us), so I wanted to know if my fear of the former was unfounded because if it is, I'll do as usual: I'll drive him crazy until he does what I say and get the shot (why can't husbands just do whatever we tell them to do the first time we tell them to do it???).
So, are side effects an urban myth?

That would be awsome if you could find the article, Balone. Thanks!

interesting discussion!

I know I have read before that many phd's have a more active immune system than the norm. Even before I knew my phd was HD positive we always said he just never gets sick. If he ever did get a bug it only lasted about 1 day and his reaction was mild. I believe I read that many phd's have a strong immune system but maybe that decreases as the HD progresses? I'm sure if the H1N1 attacks the lungs, those who are at risk of pnemonia would want the vaccine for sure.

I just got my flu shot today (normal, not swine) and one of the contraindications was for persons with a known neurological disorder. First I'd ever heard this....

I don't know about urban myth... the side affects are the same with this flu shot as any flu shot. Yes.. bug him 'til he does what you want. If it wasn't this it would be something else..smiling smiley

Luz, your husband my not mind the side affects of the swine flu for himself, but what about you? Does he want something to happen to you? Ask him that! If he gets it, your chances are increased.

this is a hard area, both my kids are just getting over the flu (probable swine) since that's what is going around now. Don't know if I will vaccinate for regular flu, stil doing some research.....the flu shot is still the only childhood vaccination that contains mercury, and mercury is not good for the brain, I also think that every year 36,000 people die of the flu (complications actually), if the flu shot is effective why does that number not ever go down? plus, they make an educated guess, it's not always the correct strain that's in there, some say better safe than sorry, but you get the mercury for nothing. there are however, single dose vials, so I am consdiering that, they don't contain mercury as a preservative, only a trace amount, still studying about it to see if I think it's right for us, just my thoughts.

I heard the mercury levels are about the same as those in a can of tuna. Nothing to worry about.

I thought the same thing until I did a little more research, again, it's hard because some studies say that but others don't, which and whom do you believe, it's confusing to me.

I don't eat tuna because of mercury contamination in high fat fish. CLover Leaf white tuna used to be the colour of cooked chicken now it is red.

I have also heard that anyone with a neurological disorder should be one of the first to get the H1N1 vaccine. They must make one that does not contain mercury. At least I know that they do for the regular flu shot. They are strongly encouraging that pregnant women get the H1N1 and I cannot imagine that they would give them one that had mercury in it.

Yes the HIN1 does have mercury in it. But seriously, if you live in the US, i'd be running to get your shot. Yours is very safe, and could save a lot of lives. Here in Canada, we have two vaccines. One of them is like the one in the US, and they are giving it to pregnant women, and to babies under 3 months old. Those are the only people in Canada that can get that one. Everyone else gets our other swine flu vaccine. This second vaccine, they added an adjuvent to it, which is an immune system booster. It makes the vaccine more effective, at a lower cost, big words being "lower cost". Yup. They have said right on our news, that they are concerned that this added adjuvent, could create autoimune disorders. For that reason, and because i already have an overactive immune system, and never get sick for more than a day, i'm not going to get it, because i'm worried it could cause inflammatory disease in the brain with my hd. My husband though, he gets a lot of chest infections, and im trying to talk him into getting it. I hope my grandaughter gets it. I would get it too, if i could get the US version. If you guys in the US are smart, i would get your vaccine as quick as you can, because they've said on the news, as soon as your vaccine runs out, Canada has extra that we're going to send down there. They also say, if you are NOT going to get the swine flu vaccine, then absolutely dont get a flu shot this year, because the flu shot will weaken your immune system to the swine flu. If you do get the swine flu shot, then you can also get your regular flu shot.

my best friend is a resperatory therapist, she has years in this field.
i asked her if we should get the shot due to the neuralogical issue. she said, it is suppose to be safe for those with neuro issues, but she said a person should always check with their particular specialist, because like it or not, the cdc does not look into specific deseases, just a general overview...

she also said that the reason the cdc is worried about the h1n1 strain, is because it is very similiar in makeup to the spanish influenza, i dont know how to explained it, but she says they are afraid of an epedemic...

Well, in spite of my previous post, and my concerns, i will be going to get my swine flu shot tomorrow, and dragging dear hubby along to get his too. I think the swine flu is a lot scarier than anything a little shot can do to me.

Having had this for over three weeks now, I wish the shot had been available sooner so I could have avoided it. The one serious problem that I had is that when the coughing got severe, it aggravated my asthma and I had trouble getting enough air. I had my head stuck in the freezer compartment of the fridge while Steve frantically searched for where I put my rescue inhaler. I don't know what I would have done had he not found it. I haven't had that complication happen with other viruses before.
