Hi everyone, I have a question about difficulty swallowing in people with HD. Im the caregiver for my dad who has had HD for about 9 years now. He is constantly complaining about not having any saliva and has trouble swallowing, even without eating. The best way he can describe it is that his throat feels like its "locking up". I have taken him to throat and gastro doctors but they aby arnold620 - Huntington's Disease Support Center
I hate HD. I hate what it's done to my dad. I hate what it's done to me. I've been the one and only caregiver for my dad for a few years now and each day gets harder and harder. I miss the fun loving, joking, happy, positive man he once was. I miss not dreading going over to see him every day. I miss spending time together, not having to worry about saying the wrong thing that will set off a moodby arnold620 - Huntington's Disease Support Center
Hello, I'd just like to get as many people's opinions as possible on this topic. I'm 24 years old and have tested positive for HD. I have a brother, who is 28, who is also at risk for HD. My brother knows nothing about the disease and doesn't even know that he's at risk. My mother and the rest of the family do not want to tell him that theres a 50/50 chance he carries the gene. Hi everyone, I've posted here one other time and the responses really helped, so I thought I'd give it another shot (mainly just to vent). I'm 23 years old and my father has HD, along with being an alcoholic. He has had it for about 8 years now and things are getting worse and worse each day. He is to the point where every little thing sets him off into a rage. We can barely go together aby arnold620 - Huntington's Disease Support Center
You have every right to be concerned about your future together. While it may not be necessary to get tested right now, I would definitely get tested before having children. As far as marriage goes, I suggest you do all of your research about HD before making a commitment. Think about what YOU want for yourself. It sounds selfish, but you have a choice in whether or not you want to spend the laby arnold620 - Huntington's Disease Support Center
Noni- My mother is the main person who is strongly against telling him. She thinks he's not strong enough, and doesn't want him to live his life as if he has it, even though he's 25....There are a few AA meetings around my area and I have tried to get my father to go but he will not. He has been in and out of rehab three times and nothing ever seems to work, I think it's just a dead end. I'm doiby arnold620 - Huntington's Disease Support Center
Thanks for the response blue. I realize theres a chance of resentment from my brother when he finds out I have not told him, but if I do tell him, i'll have to deal with the guilt of betraying my father and mother. There's really no win there. In time I'm sure I will make the right decision. I agree with you, it's extremely difficult to watch someone make poor choices, not realizing how muchby arnold620 - Huntington's Disease Support Center
Hello everyone, I'm new here so I'm not quite sure how this works. But thank you in advance for reading my post and offering any feedback you may have. I'm 22 years old and I have a father with HD. I guess I'll also go ahead and add that he's an alcoholic and has been ever since I was a child. I found out about his disease by accident one night, when he was drunk.
