You may need to re-phrase your question--the total cost of HD care regardless of who pays the costs? Cost varies depending stage of illness. Other than medications, there is not too much treatment unless you consider treatment for injuries. Does "cost" include lost income? Some people, who lose their spouses income, will tell you that is part of the cost of HD.
For example, it costs roughly $36,000 per year for in-home care--I'm in a high cost area. Then, I'd guess another $1,000 per year for doctor visits and $4,000 per year for medications. Insurance pays some, and I pay some. That's roughly $41,000 per year without considering her lost income.
For advanced cases, a nursing home in this area costs $60-$80,000 per year, maybe half that cost in more rural areas.
